"Average," "Low Average," "Extremely Low" — these words feel like verdicts, but they're just names attached to score bands. And crucially, publishers don't agree on where the bands begin and end. The same score can wear a different label depending on which test produced it.
A descriptive range is the word a test attaches to a stretch of scores — a way of translating a number into plain language. A standard score of 100 lands in the band a publisher labels "Average"; a 68 lands in one they might call "Extremely Low." The label is meant to help a reader who doesn't think in standard deviations understand roughly where a score sits.
That's genuinely useful — but it's important to remember what the label is. It's a description of a band of scores, chosen by the test publisher. It is not a diagnosis, not a category the child belongs to, and not a fixed property of the student. "Low Average" describes where a number fell on one test's scale. It does not describe who a child is.
There is no universal, official chart of descriptive ranges. Each publisher chooses its own labels and its own cutoffs, and they genuinely differ. One common system calls the entire band from 85 to 115 "Average." Another reserves "Average" for a narrower 90 to 110, and splits off "Low Average" (80–89) and "High Average" (110–119) at the edges. Some systems use gentler modern wording; older ones used terms that would never appear on a report today.
The consequence is concrete. Consider a standard score of 87:

Same score, same child, same moment — two different words, purely because the two tests drew the line differently. If you report the label without the number, a reader comparing results across tests can be misled into thinking the child performed differently when the scores were nearly identical.
Because the labels are bands, the scores that fall right at a boundary are where they mislead most. A score one point above a cutoff and a score one point below it get different words — even though, statistically, the two scores are essentially the same, well within each other's measurement error.
An 89 labeled "Low Average" and a 90 labeled "Average" are one point apart, a difference the test can't reliably distinguish — yet the labels place them in separate categories. A reader who takes the words at face value hears a meaningful gap that isn't there. This is exactly where the confidence interval earns its keep: a score of 89 with a band of 84–94 clearly straddles the boundary, and the label "Low Average" is really just one plausible description among a couple.
Labels are helpful when used as a plain-language aid to the score, and misleading when they replace it. A few habits keep them honest:
