Grade equivalents feel intuitive, which is exactly the problem. They're the score type most likely to be misunderstood in a meeting — in both directions. Here's what they actually mean, and what to read instead.
A grade equivalent (GE) looks like a grade level — "2.7" reads as "second grade, seventh month" — so everyone assumes they know what it means. But a GE is not a statement about what grade-level work a student can do. It's a comparison of raw scores.
A GE of 2.7 means: the student earned the same raw score that an average student in the seventh month of second grade would have earned on this same test. That's it. If a 4th grader takes a 4th-grade reading test and gets a GE of 7.2, it does not mean they can read 7th-grade material. They were never given 7th-grade material. It means they scored well above the 4th-grade average — and the test estimated what grade that raw score would correspond to.
An age equivalent (AE) is the identical idea expressed in years and months instead of grades — "7-3" meaning the score matches the average 7-year-3-month-old. It carries all the same problems as the grade equivalent, and should be treated with the same caution. Everything on this page about GEs applies to AEs too.
This is the part that causes real trouble in meetings. The same metric that panics one family falsely reassures another. Consider one 3rd grader, tested in October, and two different results on two different subtests:

Both of those scores are completely typical. The same child could earn both on different subtests and be doing fine across the board — but the grade equivalents tell two alarming and opposite stories, while the standard scores quietly say "average" and "a bit above average."
In the early elementary years, reading and math skills grow quickly and the norm group is tightly bunched. So a small difference in raw score translates into a big-looking difference in grade equivalents. A 3rd grader who is a few items below average — solidly in the average range by standard score — can land a GE that reads a full grade "behind."
There's an even stranger consequence hiding in the math. By definition, GE 3.0 is the median 3rd grader at the start of the year. So a perfectly average 3rd grader in October is already somewhere around GE 3.1–3.2 — which means about half of all typical 3rd graders score "below grade level" by the grade equivalent's own logic. Half of normal reads as behind. That's not a useful thing to tell a parent.
The inflated reading is arguably more damaging, because nobody questions good news. A GE well above placement gets heard as evidence of giftedness, and families may push for acceleration or advanced placement on the strength of a number that was never a claim about mastering higher-grade curriculum. The standard score usually tells a calmer story — "above average," not "exceptional."
This is the section to bookmark. When a grade equivalent comes up in a conference, the goal isn’t to lecture on psychometrics — it’s to give the parent an accurate picture in plain words, fast. A few moves make that easier.
Before the grade equivalent ever enters the conversation, anchor the parent in where the score actually falls. “Average range” and “about the same as most kids her age” are the phrases that calm a room — not a number that looks like a grade level.
“On this reading measure, she’s right in the average range — around the middle compared to other third graders. About two out of three kids score in the band she’s in.”
The same metric can make a parent unnecessarily worried or unnecessarily excited. Be ready to gently correct in either direction — without dismissing the number they’re looking at.
“I know 2.7 looks like she’s behind, but that number can be misleading at this age — it just means she got about the same raw score an average second-grader would. Compared to other third graders, she’s squarely average. She’s on track.”
“A 4.1 looks like he’s reading a year ahead, but he was only tested on third-grade material — it’s an estimate, not proof he can handle fourth-grade work. He is doing well: he’s above average for his grade. I’d call it strong, not exceptional.”
Sometimes a parent walks in already fixated on the grade equivalent. Don’t argue with it or wave it away — acknowledge the concern, then redirect to the more meaningful number.
“That’s a fair thing to notice, and I’m glad you asked about it. Grade equivalents are one of those numbers that look clearer than they are. The score I’d actually watch is this one — the percentile — because it compares her directly to other kids her age. Let me show you where she lands.”
A picture ends the debate faster than any explanation. Placing the score on a normal curve — with the average band shaded — lets a parent see that “this is where most kids are, and here’s your child, right in that band.” It turns an abstract, scary-sounding decimal into an obvious, reassuring position.
One more technical trap worth knowing: grade equivalents are not equal-interval. The distance from GE 2.7 to 3.0 is not the same amount of learning as the distance from GE 8.7 to 9.0. Because they look exactly like a ruler — evenly spaced numbers — people naturally do arithmetic on them ("he's 0.3 years behind"). That arithmetic doesn't hold. You can't average grade equivalents, you can't meaningfully subtract them, and a "0.3 gap" means something completely different at different points on the scale.
The fix isn't to fight the grade equivalent; it's to translate it to a metric that carries its own sense of spread. Standard scores and percentiles are referenced to same-age peers and come with a built-in sense of what's typical. Here's the same GE 2.7 example, reframed the way it might sound in a meeting:
